Hvar is one of Croatia's most popular islands, and there are several ways to reach it from Split and Trogir. Here's how the options compare on time, cost and convenience so you can pick the right one.
The options at a glance
- Passenger catamaran — the fastest scheduled option to Hvar Town (about 1 hour)
- Car ferry — for vehicles, sailing to Stari Grad (about 1h 45m)
- Private taxi-boat — door-to-door and flexible, roughly 50–60 minutes from Split
Catamaran (Jadrolinija / Krilo)
Fast passenger catamarans run from Split harbour straight to Hvar Town in about an hour. They're affordable and frequent in summer, but seats sell out and the timetable is fixed, so book ahead in peak season.
Car ferry
If you're bringing a car, the Jadrolinija car ferry sails Split–Stari Grad in around 1h 45m. Stari Grad is about 4 km from Hvar Town, and queues are common in July and August.
Private taxi-boat — the most flexible
A private speedboat takes you straight to Hvar Town or the Pakleni Islands on your own schedule — roughly 50–60 minutes from Split and faster from Trogir. It carries up to 12 guests and is priced per boat (from around €400). It's ideal for groups, families, late arrivals, or anyone who values time and comfort.
From Trogir or Split Airport
If you land at Split Airport or stay in Trogir, a private taxi-boat is often the quickest route to Hvar — you skip the transfer into Split harbour entirely.
Which should you choose?
- On a budget, solo or as a couple: take the catamaran
- Bringing a car: take the car ferry to Stari Grad
- Group, family, flexibility, or want a tour included: choose a private taxi-boat
