Best Time for a Boat Tour in Dalmatia: Month by Month

Sea temperature, crowds, wind and price change a lot between May and November. An honest month-by-month look at when to take a boat tour in Dalmatia.

Our season runs from May to November, and the experience at either end of it is completely different from the middle. If your dates are flexible, this is what actually changes month to month — sea temperature, how busy the swim stops get, and how often wind rearranges the plan.

May and early June — quietest, coolest water

The coast is green, the towns are calm and you will often have a swim stop to yourselves. The sea is still cool, around 18–21°C in May, warming through June. Best for people who care more about empty bays and photography than about long swims.

Late June and September — the sweet spot

If we could pick for you, it would be these. The sea is warm, the days are long, and the crowds are noticeably thinner than in high summer. September in particular has the warmest water of the whole year — the Adriatic holds summer heat well past the end of August — with a fraction of the boats.

July and August — hottest and busiest

Peak season. The water is warm, everything runs daily, and the atmosphere in Hvar and Trogir is at its liveliest. It is also when the Blue Lagoon is fullest at midday, when Blue Cave queues are longest, and when morning departures sell out first. Book earlier than you think you need to, and take the 09:00 departure if you want the lagoon closer to empty.

October and November — calm, cheap, unpredictable

October can be superb: warm sea, soft light, almost no other boats. November is a gamble — some days are flat and glorious, others are cancelled outright. Prices soften and the coast feels local again. Come with flexible dates and a plan B.

Wind, and why mornings win

The prevailing summer pattern is a light morning followed by an afternoon breeze — the maestral — that builds through the day. That is why morning departures are calmer almost year-round, and why anyone prone to seasickness should take the 09:00 slot. The two winds worth knowing by name are the bura, a cold gusty northeasterly that can shut down open crossings, and the jugo, a southerly that brings swell and rain.

Choosing by what you want

  • Warmest swimming: late July through September
  • Emptiest bays: May, early June, October
  • Best chance the Blue Cave is open: June and September, calm settled weather
  • Best value: shoulder months, when demand drops

Whichever month you land in, the half-day Blue Lagoon tour runs in sheltered water and is the most weather-resilient day we offer. The exposed routes — above all the Blue Cave expedition — are the ones to book with a spare day behind them.

FAQ

Quick answers

When is the best month for a boat tour in Croatia?
Late June and September offer the best balance: warm sea, long days and far fewer boats than July and August. September usually has the warmest water of the year.
How warm is the sea in Dalmatia?
Around 18–21°C in May, mid-20s through July and August, and still warm into late September. October is swimmable for most people; November is cool.
Is it worth taking a boat tour in October?
Often yes. October brings calm days, warm sea and almost no crowds, though the weather is less reliable than in summer, so flexible dates help.
Why are morning boat tours calmer?
The maestral, a summer afternoon breeze, builds through the day. Mornings are usually flatter, which matters if you are prone to seasickness.
What weather cancels a boat tour?
Strong bura or jugo winds and the resulting swell. Sheltered routes like the Blue Lagoon run in most conditions; exposed open-sea trips such as the Blue Cave are the first to be cancelled.
