Split Airport to Hvar: Every Way Compared (2026)

Split Airport is not in Split. It sits at Kaštela, on the coast between Trogir and the city, about six kilometres from the Trogir waterfront and twenty-five from Split's ferry port. That one fact decides how you should get to Hvar: every scheduled boat leaves from Split, so the standard route first takes you the wrong way along the coast, while the private option starts a few minutes from the terminal. Here is what each way actually costs in time and money.

Option A: bus or taxi, then the catamaran

From the terminal, bus 37 and the airport shuttle both run to Split. The shuttle is quicker (around 30 minutes to the port when the road is clear); the bus stops everywhere and takes closer to an hour. A taxi is about 30 minutes. From Split's harbour, fast passenger catamarans (Jadrolinija and Krilo) reach Hvar Town in roughly an hour and cost well under twenty euros a head. They are the sensible choice for a couple travelling light — with two caveats. Seats sell out days ahead in July and August, and the last sailing leaves in the early evening, so a delayed afternoon flight can leave you in Split for the night. Check the timetable for your date before you rely on it.

Option B: the car ferry to Stari Grad

If you are hiring a car at the airport, the Jadrolinija car ferry from Split to Stari Grad takes about two hours, and Hvar Town is another twenty minutes by road. Vehicle queues in peak season can add an hour or more; foot passengers walk on. It is the slowest way, but the only one that brings a car.

Option C: a private speedboat from the airport coast

The airport has no pier, so the private route works like this: a car collects you at the terminal and drives ten minutes to the Kaštel Štafilić or Trogir waterfront, where your boat is waiting. From there Hvar Town is about an hour across the channel past the Pakleni Islands, and you step off on the town waterfront, not at a ferry terminal. Luggage comes aboard with you. The price is per boat for up to 12 guests, from €400 (reference price 10 Sept 2026: €400), which is why families and groups use it most: split six ways it costs about what a taxi and six catamaran tickets do, and you leave when your bags do, not when the timetable says.

Which one for your flight?

• Landing before noon, two of you, no car: bus or shuttle plus the catamaran
• Landing mid-afternoon in July or August: check the last catamaran first — if it is tight, the private boat is the only way to be in Hvar for dinner
• Landing after 21:00: the private boat runs at night (with a surcharge between 22:00 and 06:00); otherwise plan a night in Split or Trogir
• Four or more people, or luggage for a week: the private boat is usually the cheaper per-person option once you add taxis
• Bringing a car: the Stari Grad ferry

Getting back to the airport

Reverse the logic. With the catamaran, be in Split port at least three hours before your flight to cover the crossing and the coast road. With a private boat, leaving Hvar two and a half hours before departure is comfortable: an hour on the water, ten minutes in the car, and the rest at check-in.
